A Refreshing Summer Cocktail

Healthy Summer Drinks

Summer is around the corner which means beach days, poolside BBQs, and lots of drinks! But let’s not forget that that refined sugar and artificial sweeteners can cause symptoms from migraines, unhealthy cravings, weight gain, and more. Stick to drinks with low to no sugar if possible or try making your own healthy summer drinks using better quality ingredients like maple syrup as a substitute for simple syrup and fresh fruit as a substitute for sugary fruit juice.

Here’s an example of how I upgrade a Gin Gimlet using fresh lime juice and maple syrup. It’s delicious and refreshing!

Ingredients

3/4 fresh lime juice

1/4 maple syrup

1/2 cup gin

Ice

Instructions: Pour all the ingredients into a shaker and shake well. Serve over ice and garnish with a lime wedge (optional).

¡El verano está a la vuelta de la esquina, lo que significa días de playa, bbq’s junto a la piscina y muchas bebidas! Pero no olvidemos que el azúcar refinada y los edulcorantes artificiales pueden causar síntomas de migrañas, antojos poco saludables, aumento de peso y más. Instrucciones: Ponga todos los ingredientes en una coctelera y agite bien. Servir sobre hielo y decorar con una rodaja de limón (opcional).

Tumeric Latte

Tumeric Latte

Turmeric, an Indian spice known for its bright orange color, is rich in curcumin, a compound with known disease-fighting and antioxidant-rich characteristics. Turmeric can reduce inflammation, boost heart and brain health, and even prevent heavy metal toxicity.

Cinnamon is full of polyphenols and antioxidants, and is a known anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anticancer, and heart-healthy spice. 

Combine turmeric and cinnamon plus these other simple ingredients to make a delicious Turmeric Latte!

Ingredients

1 (15 oz) can coconut milk

1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

½-1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch of ground nutmeg

Pinch of cardamom

Extra ground cinnamon, for sprinkling on top

Instructions: In a small pot, add coconut milk, almond milk, vanilla, honey, ground turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Whisk together and bring ingredients to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 3-5 minutes to reduce the mixture a bit; stirring occasionally. Pour into 2 small mugs, then sprinkle with a little ground cinnamon on top. Enjoy!

El turmeric, una especie india conocida por su color naranja brillante, es rica en curcumina, un compuesto con características que combaten enfermedades y son ricas en antioxidantes. La cúrcuma puede reducir la inflamación, mejorar la salud del corazón y el cerebro e incluso prevenir la toxicidad por metales pesados. 

La canela está llena de polifenoles y antioxidantes, y es una especia antiinflamatoria, antidiabética, antimicrobiana, anticancerígena y saludable para el corazón.

¡Combina el turmeric y la canela más estos otros ingredientes simples para hacer un delicioso Latte de cúrcuma!

Ingredientes

1 lata (15 oz) de leche de coco

1 taza de leche de almendras sin azúcar

½ cucharadita de vainilla

½-1 cucharada de miel o jarabe de arce

1 cucharadita de cúrcuma molida

1/4 cucharadita de canela molida

Una pizca de nuez moscada molida

Una pizca de cardamomo

Canela extra molida, para espolvorear encima

Instrucciones: En una olla pequeña, agregue leche de coco, leche de almendras, vainilla, miel, cúrcuma molida, canela, nuez moscada y cardamomo. Mezcle y hierva los ingredientes, luego reduzca el fuego a bajo y cocine a fuego lento durante 3-5 minutos para reducir un poco la mezcla; revolviendo ocasionalmente. Vierte en 2 tazas pequeñas, luego espolvorea con un poco de canela molida encima.

Make This Coffee Creamer at Home

If you’re loading your coffee up with cream and sugar in the morning, you’re starting your day on the wrong foot and can expect an inevitable sugar crash by 10 a.m.

Trading creamers made with unhealthy trans-fat and refined sugar for creamers made with healthy fat and other clean ingredients is an easy way to take your morning coffee from a dairy-filled sugar bomb to healthy fuel with a caffeine kick.

When shopping for creamers make sure to read the ingredient labels – avoided added sugar and preservatives. 

You can also try making creamer at home. It’s easy, delicious and most importantly you know what’s in it. Here’s a simple recipe my friend Martha, Health Coach Sabor Holístico shared with me. I make Martha’s creamer every week – Joe and I love it.

Ingredients
1 cup cashews, soaked for an hour in hot water
1 cup filtered water
1/2 cup full fat coconut milk
1/2 cup MCT oil (I use bulletproof)
2 scoops collagen powder (bulletproofvitalproteins)
stevia or maple syrup as a light sweetener (optional)

Instructions: Blend all the ingredients in a blender on high until smooth, 2-3min. Store in a glass container for up to a week! Enjoy with your favorite coffee or matcha.

1/2 taza de leche de coco con toda la grasa
1/2 taza de aceite MCT (uso bulletproof)
2 cucharadas de colágeno en polvo (bulletproof o vitalproteins)
stevia o jarabe de maple para edulcar (opcional)

Instrucciones: Mezcle todos los ingredientes en una licuadora a velocidad alta hasta que esté suave, 2-3 minutos. ¡Almacene en un recipiente de vidrio por hasta una semana! Disfruta con tu café o matcha favorito.

Celery Juice Challenge

The Celery Juice Challenge is the new trend. Use a blender or juicer and enjoy the amazing health benefits of this easy-to-make elixir in the mornings. It can easily be made in a big batch and stored up to 2 days. in the fridge. Give it a try and enjoy the naturally detoxifying benefits of this amazing superfood. 

I started the Celery Juice Challenge after my visit to Miami for Thanksgiving.

Every time I travel, mostly to Florida, where my family is, I indulge in comfort food that I don’t eat every day and unfortunately, this is not the type of food that I’m used to eating now. So that causes a lot of bloating, causes a lot of problems with my digestive system and overall, it’s not a good feel. So, because of that and after a lot of research I decided to try the Celery Juice challenge which a lot of people have been talking about.

Some people can call it a fad diet some people can call it a trend, but generally there is nothing wrong with drinking 16oz of Celery juice in the morning on an empty stomach hoping that you will feel better and get your digestion back on track.

So that is exactly what I did. For the next three weeks, I was very diligent about drinking 16oz of celery juice that I made using my Vitamix blender and an almond milk mesh bad, and I started drinking it.

What Changed..

To my surprise, I started to feel more energized, had less bloating, regular bowel movements, a lot of elimination. I started to break out on my skin which (I didn’t know this at the time) is part of the detoxification process. The salt crystals in the celery juice help detoxify the liver and the toxins have to come out somewhere. So, I started to feel less bloating, my skin cleared up after a few days, I was sleeping better. I felt like I was having coffee in the mornings because I wanted to have coffee in the mornings and not necessarily because I needed to fight or get rid of that sluggish feeling. Overall, it has been an amazing addition to my diet, that along with healthy food during the day, exercise and a good amount of sleep has helped me drastically.

Fast forward to now, and I am not as strict with the celery juice as I was in the beginning. I don’t drive myself crazy with these schedules, I do it if I have time because I know it makes me feel better, but I don’t beat myself up if I miss a day or a weekend. I think it’s an amazing way to help your body feel better, for your digestive system to work better which in turn helps absorbs the nutrients in your body from the foods that you eat. Now it’s your turn..

I’ve included a quick way to make your celery juice when you don’t have a juicer at home. It’s always important to buy your celery organic as with other fruits such as bananas. Buying celery organic is better for you, the pesticides are not there which makes for a better experience and for a lot more health benefits.

So, I encourage everyone to try. As I always say on all of my posts and on Instagram, I am not a doctor. I am a health coach in training, I am a mom, I am a wife and I am a woman that wants to be healthy and do the best for herself and for her family and have the best health that I am able to have. I encourage you to read more about it, make an educated decision as to if the celery juice challenge is right for you.

I also encourage you if you’re going to start drinking celery juice in the mornings to consult your doctor before you start making any drastic changes to your diet.

Overall, I am a huge advocate for celery juice in the morning and I hope everyone either tries it or at least learns more about the health benefits of celery juice.

Here’s how you can make celery juice at home using a Vitamix and a nut milk bag*.

(A juicer might be easier/quicker but I don’t have one.)

Ingredients

1 bunch of organic celery, washed

1/4 cup filtered water

Instructions

1. Chop the celery and add to your blender. Begin to blend. If it’s not blending pour water in small amounts until the celery starts to blend

2. Strain the celery pulp out using nut milk bag or strainer.

3. Drink immediately on an empty stomach

*I love this NUT MILK BAG – it’s cheap, sturdy and easy to wash

Refined-Sugar Free Caipirinhas

Refined-Sugar Free Caipirinhas

Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with cachaça (sugarcane liquor), sugar and lime. It’s a smooth, sweet, summer drink perfect for outside picnics and BBQ’s.

We flipped this recipe by using coconut palm sugar instead of refined sugar, fresh lime juice, and pure Brazilian cachaça! My guilt-free summer drink. Cheers!

Ingredients
1.5 oz pure Brazilian cachaça (we like this brand)
1/2 lime unpeeled, cut into quarts
1 tbsp coconut palm sugar (we like this brand)
1 cup crushed iced

Instructions
Add the lime and coconut palm sugar to a cocktail glass. Using the back of a spoon muddle the sugar and lime until all the lime juice is squeezed out. Add crushed ice and cachaça. Stir and enjoy!
